6 ways to motivate yourself to work out
“Exercising more” is a new year’s resolution we all plan for after the holiday season, but how many times have you promised to do just that, only to fall short of your goals?

The start of a new year always brings a feeling of optimism and hope in trying new things or improving your lifestyle habits, but we understand that the post-holiday blues can sometimes result in a lack of motivation to exercise, and before you know it, March is quickly approaching and you haven’t hit the gym since 2016!

Fear not, we’re here to give you six ways to motivate yourself to work out in 2017.

1. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself
Just like telling yourself you shouldn’t eat that second slice of chocolate cake makes you want it even more, a sure way to forego exercising is to continuously tell yourself that you have to do it. Instead of thinking of working out as something you have to do, think of it as something that is a part of your daily routine.

2. Try new classes and exercises
Whether the struggle of motivating yourself to exercise stems from a lack of motivation or boredom with your current exercise regimen, a new year brings with it a new opportunity for you to finally sweat it out at that Hot Yoga class you’ve been eyeing, or to finally go for a Zumba session.
There’s always a certain excitement and nervousness that comes with trying something new, which could perhaps be exactly what is needed to motivate you to exercise. Going for a new class or trying a new exercise also challenges your mind and body, and could provide you with your new favourite way to stay fit in 2017.

3. Devise a pre-workout playlist
If you already have a workout playlist that gets you pumped during exercise, why not devise a pre-workout playlist to motivate you to work out? Listen to this playlist on your commute to the yoga studio or gym. Like muscle memory, music can act as a trigger to a certain mindset. Once you’ve made listening to a pre-workout playlist part of your entire workout routine, soon enough, putting that playlist on will get you motivated to go exercise even when you think you're not really up for it.

4. Invest in new workout clothes
Working out is about treating your body to the exercise it deserves, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look good while doing it! Studies have shown that investing in quality sports clothing can improve performance by boosting confidence. With a new year representing a fresh start, sprucing up your workout attire is a great way to motivate yourself to hit the gym to show off your new threads.

5. Find a workout buddy

There are few things that can motivate you to hit the gym more than having a buddy to sweat with! Not only does making arrangements to attend a class add to your motivation of actually going, having someone who can challenge you and provide a bit of healthy competition adds to the quality of your workout. What’s best? You both can treat yourselves to a healthy post-workout meal or smoothie together!

6. Try to live a holistically healthy lifestyle
A truly fit lifestyle is holistic and you need to pay attention not only to regular exercise, but to your diet and mindset as well. Being mindful of what you put in your body naturally makes you consider your health in the bigger picture, and once you start doing that, you’ll soon find yourself thinking of exercise as something that you need to do in order to be the best version of you.
